Cuyahoga Falls, OH - Blossom Music Center

Cuyahoga Falls, OH
Blossom Music Center
Preface: This was a show we’d been looking forward to for awhile! Daniel has some family we rarely get to see who live close to the venue so it was a perfect time to see some family and catch a good show!
Show Notes: Follow You to Virgie managed to fall off the set for a total of one show. Added back to this setlist as we assumed it would be, it rounded out the acoustic part of the show with Jesse and CJ playing along with Tyler. Oneida also found its way back to the setlist which was a welcomed surprise.
Oneida was seemingly known by everyone in Cuyahoga Falls and it was clear that this song has taken hold amongst fans as a favorite. Dirty Ought Trill fell back to 4th on the setlist while Getting to the Bottom made its way to the 2nd slot.
Tyler seemed to be very passionate on stage about this show, he even mentioned having felt not so great earlier in the day and then coming on to stage making him feel better. It was clear the whole band was feeling it, really. Craig in particular was seemingly feeling the vibe of this show more than others - at least it appeared so to us. Craig is always noticed for his high flying bass playing, his puffed out hair, and his sheer happiness on stage. This show seemed to amplify all of those (we don’t know anything about hair but perhaps it was larger due to the rain???).
Matt also seemed to be on some sort of different level and it was easily noticed when he was playing the accordion standing near CJ and Craig. For us this has been a highlight each time we’ve seen it but this day just seemed more jubilant than others. It’s also very possible that we were just happier at this show and it amplified the whole show for us.
We were blessed with a very nice couple who sat next to us and had been to a few Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps shows before. We were blessed to have bought covered seats since it rained nearly non-stop for the entire show. And, we were blessed to have gotten there in time to see Hayes Carll, finally!
What an absolutely amazing artist. We can’t stress enough how much you need to go check out the opening bands at each show! We’ve found so many great artists by simply getting there early to see them open!
For the topic of setlist again, it’s now becoming more clear that Snipe Hut being followed by Tulsa Turnaround might be a thing of the past as Snipe Hunt has now found itself as the next to last song a few times now. The guys have also been ending with House Fire on a fairly regular basis and while House Fire starts and ends slowly, musically, we believe it’s an amazing closer despite most people wanting a more upbeat ending to a show usually. House Fire reminds you you’re alive in the middle with upbeat grooves that are exaggerated seeing them live and then tappers off into an outro. In Daniel’s opinion House Fire has for a long time been the best live song the band has. It should be mentioned that House Fire isn’t a song Daniel would tell you is an amazing song but rather he believes it’s the best the band and Tyler play together collectively and that it’s the peak of that happening in a live setting.

Venue Notes: Blossom Music Center is a very unique venue to say the least. The pavilion seating here allows for amazing views from any seat. Unlike some pavilions, Blossom offers a unique roof over the seats which is held up by pillars in the back of the building meaning that no seats have an obstructed view. This roof is clearly designed with sound in mind as its wavy yet flowing wood-esque look causes sound to flow from the stage to the back and create great acoustics .
While most venues open up by increasing the height of the roof toward the lawn Blossom doesn’t. The roof height is seemingly taller closer to the stage. We didn’t venture into the lawn to see how this impacted the view but several people who we spoke to said it was more limited than other pavilions. The pillars being in the back of the pavilion also means that there are spots in the lawn which have obstructed views so we’d highly suggest getting there earlier if you want to assure yourself a clear view.
Blossom is also very unique in their vendor and merch set ups. Typically at pavilions we’ve been to, you walk in right at vendor booths, but here you actually enter and have to walk a little bit before coming to any vendors. Then, if you’re sitting in the pavilion seats you have to walk down a steep hill that is lined with vendors and at bottom everything levels out and you’re in a mecha of food, merch, and restrooms. This was actually a fantastic setup because it allowed you to do everything you could possibly need in a short distance. Lines were normal sized, moving fairly fast, and truthfully it was one of the best setups we’d seen for holding a bunch of vendors in one place. We’d highly recommend you trying the Philly Cheese Steak Stromboli if you’re looking for some good tasting food!
Parking Notes: Parking was free and that’s pretty much the only good thing about it. In fact, as silly as this sounds, we’d recommend saving up quite a bit of money to buy parking at this venue.
We were parked in the farthest parking lot away from the venue which we’d hoped would help with leaving; it didn’t. Truthfully the parking situation can’t be talked about enough for this venue. Parked close to a mile and a half away you’re faced with walking on a street which has a walking lane but seemingly the staff funnels cars into. This causes much confusion and frustration.
You’re essentially walking half on the road and half off the road until you reach a point where you have to cross the road - which is now 3 lanes of traffic and no one really controlling the situation. Once you’ve crossed you assume you’ve got to be close but you’re just in the main parking lot now. Walking for another 5 minutes or so you finally approach the venue where you can expect to walk another quarter mile or so to get to anywhere you’ll need to be.
Leaving is much more of a nightmare than arriving. At this point you’re now met with 3 lanes of leaving traffic which are not guided anywhere so people are driving in the walking lane.
This mainly uphill one and a half mile walk back is now forced to be in a hilly grass area next to the road with limited lighting and no staff directing any traffic.
Once you get back to your car you’re greeted with only one way out of the entire parking lot that is now filled with thousands of people who’re as ready as you are to get home. We got back into our car at 10:35pm (having left with 3 songs left because we knew the length we had to walk) and did not move a SINGLE INCH until 11:25pm. It wasn’t until 11:44pm we were even in a line of cars and out of a parking spot. We got out of the parking lot we were in around 12:15am.
It’s sufficient to say this is the worst traffic and traffic pattern we’ve ever dealt with while traveling for Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps shows.
Travel Notes: We were coming back from Memphis for this trip so we took the exact route as previously mentioned in the Mempho Fest travel notes. Instead of making stops in Nashville though we decided to keep going because we wanted to get to our families house hours quicker.
This was nothing short of a fast trip, or as fast as a 10+ hour trip can be. We stopped 2 times, once to get gas and another to get Arby’s (highly recommend their steak nuggets).
Per usual we’ll recommend traveling through Kentucky as their roads are superior to most you’ll ever ride one. Southern Ohio going toward Columbus is also amazing scenery. We enjoy traveling in most parts of Ohio and this trip was no different.
A lot of people don’t realize how hilly southern Ohio is but it’s very comparable to the hills of Kentucky and very similar to riding on southern roads. We should also mention that while we didn’t catch a show of theirs the Cleveland Orchestra is homed by Blossom and we believe they’d sound amazing at the venue.
Bonus: BOOM! Tyler steps onto the stage, the crowd’s roaring, everyone’s on their feet, and the jams have just begun! The boys are opening with Eatin’ Big Time, with the visuals and the band getting into the music it’s something you can’t take your eyes off of. As the show goes on they continue to hold your captivation so it was odd when we saw a few people around us looking up into the rafters above them. Then we lay eyes on him for the first time: Roy the Raccoon (at least that’s what we named him)! This real life raccoon is hanging out in the rafters watching Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps! Seriously - go look at the photos page! This little bandit got a great seat for free!
