Camping World Stadium
Preface: Guys and girls, it’s the ROLLING STONES! I mean come on now! THE Rolling Stones.
The fucking Rolling Stones!
Show Notes: When Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps get to play 7 songs in an opening set for the Rolling Stones what do they do? Something pretty typical of themselves.
They play an unreleased instrumental Cluck Old Hen as the second song! They scrub the acoustic part of the show. And, they don’t play their second most streamed song “All Your’n.”
That’s right, while opening for the Rolling Stones, Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps allowed the band to shine in Camping World Stadium!
What would seem to be a time to play only hits the boys did just the opposite. They chose to play Old Country Chuck, Cluck Old Hen, Whitehouse Road, Rustin’ in the Rain, Honky Tonk Flame, Way of the Triune God, and House Fire. Every single one of these songs let the band flourish!
We just wished we could have been in the room when this setlist was curated up. Typically we don’t speculate on what people think or do because we’re not them and we have no real idea but this seems to be a setlist designed entirely to make the whole band standout. And it worked!
We felt like we were the only ones in the crowd who were there just for Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps - or at least that’s the whole reason we drove from Canada to Florida in 2 days to be at this show. The crowd really did open up to Tyler and the guys after a couple songs and it seemed the people on the floor were really grooving.
To be honest we can’t go past this part in the blog without saying WE SAW THE FUCKING ROLLING STONES! We obviously love following Tyler and the boys along at each show we can but the Rolling Stones are literally the foundation for much of the music we know and love today.
The Rolling Stones are, in our opinion, in the top 10 bands of all time (and in Daniel’s top 5). To ignore the fact that this was a Rolling Stones show would be wrong and we believe everyone would agree with that.
A lot of people may not know but Mick and the Stones hand pick their openers so for Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps to be hand picked we can only assume meant a lot to them. For us it’s easy to be impressed or caught off guard but we imagine as touring artists it’s much harder for that to happen. We don’t know their thoughts personally but we’d venture a guess that a call from Mick Jagger would have perked up some eyebrows in the Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps dressing room and that every single band member felt like a kid again being told they’d share the same stage.
Tyler Childers and some guy named Mick Jagger
Venue Notes: Camping World Stadium is a fairly nice venue, nothing too amazing, nothing too bad. It was ample its food options, restrooms, and concessions. There was nothing notably wrong and nothing notably amazing.
The concourse is very wide and allows for easy movement, which is a plus over some stadiums we’ve been to.
Parking Notes: LOL! That’s all that can be said about our parking experience here. Even the information seekers can be who-doed. We parked in this very nice parking lot right outside the venue, cost us $40 and only took us about 5 minutes to walk to the venue. Turns out the guy who parked us there was park of a scheme ring that runs wild in this area.
Long story short we came back and our car was gone. We spoke to the local police and they told us it’d likely been towed. Come to find out they can tow your car for parking on private property even without a sign hanging up.
Turns out this is a scam ran out of this area each show were the person parking you works for the towing company. They park you and several others, then when they’re full they’ll call the tow truck and tow your car to their impound lot about a mile away. Then they keep filling the lot up over and over and towing people. So for every person who pays $40 to park they end up paying $125 to get their car back.
To get your car back you’ve got to meet a man at an unlit back ally next to the ATM (which of course they own and collect the fees off of) so you can pay them with cash or Cash App (they accept nothing else).
We opted to pay with Cash App, got our car back, and then told Cash App we didn’t make the purchase and got all our money back. So, if you’re in Orlando and your car gets towed by these scumbags just pay with Cash App and tell Cash App you didn’t make the purchase and they’ll refund you. (But you didn’t hear that from us).
Travel Notes: We usually don’t profess this but we’re almost positive we got to this show in a way no one else did.
Since Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps were added so late to the bill we had already made our plans to go to Madison Square Garden and take a week of vacation. That week included a stay in Montréal - three days before the Orlando show.
So we left Montréal on Friday morning, went to Toronto in the afternoon and Niagara Falls in the evening. After leaving there was drove back into the US and stopped to eat at a bar right outside of the Bill’s stadium in Orchard Park, NY. We left there and drove to Erie, PA where we crashed for a few hours and then woke up Saturday morning to head south.
Before we’re too far removed from Canada we also want to point out something that we should have thought about but didn’t; in other countries your phone doesn’t work unless you buy an international plan. We didn’t do that. So shortly after crossing into Canada we lost all service which required quite the effort for us to find WiFi to download some maps. Being an English speaker in a French town isn’t the easiest to navigate but we managed. So, let our ignorance be your guiding light and grab the international plan (you can typically add this on to your existing service for less than $10 a day - well worth it).
Saturday we drove from Erie, PA to Kingsland, GA. Only stopping a couple of times for snacks and gas.
Sunday we woke up and finished the drive, stopping at a family members house to stay the night right outside of Daytona Beach.
Monday we woke up and went to a couple of Disney attractions before heading to the show.
Our travel notes would be: Niagara Falls is amazing on the Canadian side. Montréal is an AMAZING place and Le Rosay Hôtel Boutique is the best hotel you could possibly imagine! Do yourself a favor if you’re ever going to Canada via Vermont and stay at the Le Rosay Hôtel Boutique which sits facing Baie Missisquoi.
If you're ever near Daytona Beach you have to stop at the Speedway and just marvel at how huge of a place it is! Also, check out the Dale Earnhardt statue outside it’s doors!
