Good Moon Music Festival - Durham, NC

Good Moon Music Festival is back after a 1 year hiatus! Headlined by Sylvan Esso two nights and Tyler Childers one night, this festival is not something you’ll want to miss!
Previously this festival has been held at the local athletic complex and the Durham Bull’s stadium but this year it seems that Tyler Childers will be playing the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC). The DPAC is just 1 of seemingly 4 locations bands and artists will be playing. The other 3 include The Pinhook, Boom Club and American Tobacco Campus.
The Pinhood and Boom Club are staples in the Durham music scene hosting an array of different bands, often smaller and more local. While the American Tobacco Campus is an entertainment complex which hosts concerts, has food and drinks, and is better described as a nicer shopping mall area where you can have a date night and see a concert.
We can not express enough how AMAZING the DPAC is. Daniel’s first time seeing Willie Nelson was at DPAC and he goes back every time he finds a reason. The idea of Tyler being able to belt out songs in what is nearly a perfect acoustic setting is absolutely unreal and a must attend for anyone! The DPAC’s capacity is sub-3000 so we expect this to be a very unique show and much more intimate than others typically are. We’ve honestly never been so excited to see Tyler in our home state and to couple that with Sylvan Esso who are from North Carolina as well is just the icing on the cake.
For our take on the local food and whatnot we suggest taking a stroll through the American Tobacco Campus and picking out some local food to try. Obviously it’s North Carolina so we’d recommend the Tobacco Road Sports Café which specializes in southern foods and has about 50 TVs on the wall so you can watch every game all the time.
If you’re coming from the west we’d highly suggest stopping by Hippo Records in Greensboro or Winston-Salem. The Greensboro location is the original location and you can often find the owner there and spend some time chatting with him about all types of music. They have the best prices, offering thousands of records for $1 each on their bottom shelf, and are the friendliest folks around. If the owner, Patrick, happens to be there, mention that some Tyler Childers fans sent you there and he’ll know exactly who you’re talking about.
Also, right down the road from Hippo Records in Greensboro is Hops Burger Bar which was rated as the best burger in America about 10 years ago. While the original is very tough to park at and the line is often long it’s certainly worth the wait.
We also suggest staying in Greensboro versus Durham. Greensboro is slightly under an hour drive to Durham but has much larger options for things to do during the day if you’re not going to spend your whole day at the festival. In the event you are spending your whole day in Durham for the festival we recommend splurging and staying at the 21c Museum Hotel in Durham. While it’s more costly than other hotels in the area, this one is steeped in art, modern amenities, and frankly is the best hotel around.
Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps will be playing Friday, October 9th with aja monet opening! aja monet is known for her poetry and spoken word music and will certainly bring a new experience to the stage that we haven’t seen from any other opener!
